A senior Russian general has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The attack occurred on Monday morning when an bomb concealed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.

Authorities stated that one theory under investigation suggests the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Scene of the Incident

Officials have been are examining the site, which is understood to be in a south district of the metropolis.

Media coverage state the detonation took place in a vehicle lot close to a residential building.

History of Assaults

Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.

This new event comes after other high-profile incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine earlier attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.

Hostilities has witnessed clandestine operations reaching into the center of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be active.
