A Veteran Game Director's New Game That Looks Very Different But Expands Upon The Same Ideas.

Bruce Straley behind the iconic survival game is crafting a new venture into game development. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the debut from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, and it expands the ideas of the legacy he helped create prioritizing characters that learn and adapt.

A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure

Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a narrative-driven exploration title. You guide an elderly witch, a character who defies traditional video game heroics. This central concept came from a goal to rethink the typical hero’s journey.

"What if you didn’t have traditional weapons? What if you were physically limited? What if you’re a little old lady?" posed Straley. "I thought it was deeply interesting to question the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about fighting your way through obstacles, including traits like dedication, resolve, and tenacity."

The Reactive Companion: A Spiritual Successor to Ellie

Even though the title looks different visually, its groundbreaking system evolves from the technology seen in The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from one pivotal question: "How could one create an AI partner truly living and learning based on player actions?"

Your strange critter partner that accompanies Gertie isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a toddler that interacts with evolving behaviors. Initially, it investigates its surroundings, which can cause silly antics. Next, it enters a playful state. In the end, it watches and learns to learn how things work.

  • As an instance: When the partner witnesses an object being placed, it understands the action but not the reason.
  • This leads it to begin grabbing nearby items to see where they go, repeating what it saw.
  • The 'why' is learned when it stumbles upon solving a puzzle itself, creating a genuine learning moment.

A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative

This intricate technology aims to foster a deeply personal experience. Straley stresses that this project functions as a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience as opposed to a traditionally structured narrative.

"Anytime I tried more hardcore story beats for this project, the magic dissipated," the director noted. "The core appeal in this partnership stems from how each individual player will inevitably create unique moments and stories compared to my playthrough."

By prioritizing organic narrative born from interaction, this upcoming game signifies both a continuation and a significant shift from the director’s iconic past work. The project is presently in development for computer systems.
