Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its current cynical streak. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
