Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with his partner, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual collection highlighting causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed through social media that he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which originally created in 2016 to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Future Intentions
The founder stated that he will develop additional ice cream flavors that address concerns that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.
The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
