Cameron Norrie earned the biggest victory of his career by rebounding from a early deficit to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this win represents Norrie's first ever victory over a current world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who is now the newest British man in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Returning from health issues last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just aimed to appreciate my performance in the latter part of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the most significant success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and likely the most in-form player in the sport right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 straight Masters 1000 wins, which was the best series of outcomes in the young champion's early career.

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to success in the beginning as he eased past the first set. Nevertheless, Norrie steadily battled back into contention by executing with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into lengthy, grueling rallies.
