The House of Mouse's Real-Life Moana Teaser Looks Remarkably Similar to a Cartoon
The first trailer for the forthcoming real-life version of Moana has been released. Would you believe that, similar to many of Disney's real-life reinterpretations, it appears very much like an animated film and much less like a true film with real actors?
Spectacular Imagery That Retain an Cartoonish Look
The trailer for the new iteration of Moana is certainly spectacular. It includes sweeping scenery, gorgeous music, and familiar personalities. However, it still looks like an animated film. The exaggerated visuals show figures flying, water defying gravity, and Maui transforming into an insect and a winged creature. Each of these effects is accomplished through digital effects and CGI. Similar to earlier Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of CGI is so extensive that it raises the debate: what makes these movies “real-life” besides the marketing label?
Story and Music Audiences Know and Love
Regardless, this latest Moana appears to be a reimagining of the first story, complete with new renditions of the beloved songs. According to an official synopsis, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an memorable journey to bring back prosperity to her people.”
Fresh Performers and Familiar Stars
Meanwhile, the trailer includes a sample of the new take on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is taking over the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the original films.
A key figure who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be portraying Maui. Of course, that character already resembled Johnson, so having him play the part in the real-life remake seems reasonable.
Fan Favorite Character Shows Up
Arguably the highlight moment of the preview arrives in the last scene. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, squawking at the camera. What better way to present the film’s real mascot?
Release Date
The real-life take of Moana debuts in theaters on July 10, 2026.
