The Reze Arc Movie Tops Domestic Cinema Earnings in First Weekend

Has Sony done it again? Following the box office performance of the hit anime Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million at the box office, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the hundred-million-dollar milestone internationally, hitting a international earnings of over $108 million in its opening frame. This movie surpassed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second weekend in theaters, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9M).

Strong U.S. and Global Results

Helmed by director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the film is a straightforward follow-up of the debut season of the Chainsaw Man series. It earned over $18 million in North America after a robust five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday performance. Internationally, the produced by MAPPA movie added $14.7 million across 46 international territories, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million through Sony distribution ($43.1M abroad, $18.2 million stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its final earnings figure.

Parallels to Previous Anime Hits

Promotional firm a leading anime marketing group previously spoke, drawing parallels between the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which made $34M in the domestic market in 2022 and started with a nearly identical $18M domestically. The new film's opening frame is in line with that standard, while its $108 million international sum currently tracks slightly below Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6M total earnings. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will earn the earnings seen by blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a huge win for the studio.

Promotional Efforts Drive Success

Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to drive their leadership at the animated movie market. The Reze Arc marketing campaign began at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in summer with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita-themed pictures, then continued with a notable appearance at NYCC showcasing exclusive clips, lotteries for fans, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and popular figures too after the concluding day of the gathering.

Future Prospects

2025 stands as a major time for animated films, and for the studio, which has an additional anime film premiering this year in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
