The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in England's Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected group, indicating there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an all-seam attack on a ground that has hosted several past matches.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has claimed 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Spin Options Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon commented on Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” he said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and excel out here.”
