Understanding LegCo in the Hong Kong SAR: A Brief Explanation.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's Legislative Council serves as a regional legislature with the mandate to pass and change laws for the region. Yet, elections for this assembly have experienced a significant decline in meaningful opposition against a backdrop of major systemic overhauls in the past few years.
Subsequent to the return to Chinese administration, a framework of "one nation, two systems" was established, pledging that Hong Kong would keep a degree of independence. Over time, critics contend that these freedoms have been increasingly eroded.
Significant Events and Shifts
Back in 2014, legislation was introduced that was designed to allow residents to choose the city's leader. Critically, this process was limited to contenders pre-approved by central authorities.
In 2019 was marked by widespread unrest, culminating in an incident where protesters breached the parliamentary premises to express anger against a proposed legal amendment.
The Effect of the NSL
Enacted in mid-2020, the security legislation granted extensive authority to central authorities over Hong Kong's affairs. Acts such as collusion were made illegal. After this law, all significant democratic party disbanded.
Today's Election System
Elections for the legislature are viewed as Hong Kong's primary democratic process. However, laws established in the past few years now ensure that only candidates deemed pro-establishment are permitted to stand for election.

Public Response
Amid most avenues for dissent now restricted, not voting has emerged as one of the few peaceful ways for residents to show disapproval. Consequently historically low participation rates in the latest LegCo contests.
